James Comey cautioned about a “serious threat” to public confidence in federal law enforcement following the dismissal of his daughter, Maurene Comey, from her position as a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
In a video shared on Substack on Sunday, the former FBI director, who was dismissed by Donald Trump for misconduct during his first term, responded to his daughter’s termination last week, reiterating a familiar Democratic narrative that the president is persistently “attacking” the DOJ and compromising its autonomy.
Maurene Comey most recently oversaw the prosecution of hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs and previously played a significant role in the prominent cases against Jeffrey Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, as reported by Newsweek.
The DOJ did not disclose the reason for her termination. However, the timing—amid ongoing controversy and increasing skepticism regarding the management of the Epstein investigation—has intensified an already politically charged atmosphere, according to Newsweek.
James Comey stated that there exists a “reservoir of trust and credibility” within the DOJ, but it is jeopardized due to the department’s recent actions.
He recited a letter his daughter penned in response to her dismissal and remarked: “I don’t have much to add to that, except to say: the reservoir is in grave danger right now.”
He further stated, “Trump and the individuals who lead the Department of Justice are relentlessly attacking the dam day after day, attempting to transform it into just another gold-leaf-covered Trump subsidiary.
“Our greatest hope is that principled individuals will remain and heed Maureen’s request—have the courage to always do what is right. You may face termination for acting in that manner, but there is honor in that—and nothing but disgrace for those who fail to stand up,” Comey expressed.

Comey was appointed as the FBI director in 2013 by then-President Barack Obama. He was instrumental in the 2016 presidential election when he reopened an investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server just days prior to the election.
In 2017, Trump dismissed Comey, officially citing his management of that investigation.
Critics contended, however, that the true motive may have been Comey’s involvement in the FBI’s inquiry into potential collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia, which ultimately proved to be a significant fabrication, as demonstrated by years of evidence following the election.
Meanwhile, former officials from the Obama administration implicated in new revelations regarding the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation have remained silent, despite accusations that they “manufactured” intelligence that initiated the probe years ago.
Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, declassified documents on Friday that disclosed “overwhelming evidence” showing how, after Trump’s victory in the 2016 election, Obama and his national security team established the foundation for the prolonged Trump-Russia collusion investigation, as reported by Conservative Brief on Tuesday.
Gabbard stated that the documents demonstrated that officials from the Obama administration “manufactured and politicized intelligence” to create the narrative that Russia was attempting to influence the 2016 presidential election, despite findings from the intelligence community that contradicted this.
The newly released documents identify Obama, Comey, and senior National Security Council officials who were in office at that time.
On Monday, Gabbard submitted a criminal referral to the Justice Department related to these findings. DOJ officials did not disclose any further details regarding the individual for whom the criminal referral was made.
Gabbard informed Fox News Digital that this “is not a partisan issue,” but rather one that “affects every American.”
“The information we are releasing today clearly indicates that there was a treasonous conspiracy in 2016 perpetrated by officials at the highest levels of our government,” Gabbard stated to Fox.
